Why join Fresh?
Join us on our journey to solve real-world problems using cutting-edge technologies like robotics, machine learning, and computer vision. At Fresh, we prioritize the end-to-end user experience, crafting solutions that resonate with users. Our agile, diverse, and driven team believes in collaborative problem-solving and places people at the forefront of everything we do.
What You'll Be Doing:
We're seeking a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join a nearshore engineering team in Costa Rica supporting a new product introduction for a global leader in test and measurement: an ultra-low pressure primary calibration standard. You'll port and extend the instrument's controller firmware onto a new microcontroller platform, working closely with the client's ESW Product Owner and our electrical and embedded Linux engineers.
Core Responsibilities:
● Port legacy instrument firmware to a new controller platform across processor architectures, migrating to Zephyr RTOS where possible.
● Develop drivers for sensors, A2D converters, solid-state relays, serial interfaces, and a precision load cell (configuration, linearity correction, and span calibration).
● Implement measurement, valve control, and protective behavior: validated valve sequences, automatic bypass, and defined safe states on abort, power loss, or loss of host communication.
●Implement the RS-232 host protocol used by the embedded Linux system computer, including device identity and firmware update through the host.
● Develop signed, verified firmware for a bridge board microcontroller, updated only through the system computer.
● Port a second firmware load for a very-low-pressure controller, including its pressure control loop.
● Build CLI and diagnostic tools for bring-up, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) with unit tests.
Requirements and Skills:
● 7+ years of embedded firmware experience after a BS/MS in Computer, Electrical, or Software Engineering, or equivalent; able to work with significant independence.
● Expert embedded C on microcontroller platforms.
● Zephyr RTOS: device drivers, devicetree, threads, and IPC.
● Firmware porting across processor architectures, including undocumented legacy code.
● Driver development for sensors, serial interfaces (RS-232, USB, SPI, I2C), and replacement components.
● Hands-on bring-up and debugging on prototype hardware with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
● Git and code review workflows.
● English (proficiency in speaking and writing).
Preferred Qualifications
● Precision measurement, metrology, or calibration instruments.
● Secure firmware: signed images, secure boot, and anti-rollback on microcontrollers.
● Secure coding (CERT C), static analysis, sanitizers, and fuzzing; familiarity with IEC
62443-4-1.
● Closed-loop pressure, motion, or process control.
● CI/CD with GitHub Actions.
● Use of AI-assisted development tools within client policies.
Why Join Us?
At Fresh, we empower our team to excel by offering:
● Leadership driven by integrity and values.
● Competitive salary.
● Training and development opportunities.
● Collaborative work environment with a focus on growth.
● Medical Plan
● English Lessons
● Relaxed and friendly work environment
● Schedule flexibility with results oriented philosophy
Equal Employment Opportunity:
We are committed to diversity and inclusion. All qualified individuals will be considered for
